Alexis Nunnelly is a modern-day myth maker and multidisciplinary artist based in Philadelphia.

Her image making, firmly rooted in storytelling and portraiture, reimagines a sliver of the female experience through a fusion of colorful, expressive personal narrative with mythology, pop culture, art history, the erotic, and spiritual embodiment. You see a reverence for the modern goddess, each a unique monument of personal power, housing a soul with their own symbols & stories to tell.

Her work exclaims self expression, universal truths, archetypal characters, & nature’s reliable recurrence through the lens of the present…. a continuum of making, unmaking, and remaking.

Through her world, The Artist Type, she transforms the creative process into a ritual of self-recognition—guiding women to awaken their inner muse, express themselves with creative confidence and sovereignty, and bring their truth to life as art.

She holds a BFA in Painting from Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis, IN
and an MFA in Painting from The New York Studio School in NYC.

a statement on my work:

My work slices through the masks we wear — stitched by nurture, culture, desire, and survival — to make portraits of the modern woman as the narrator of her own story, monumentally proclaiming her truth. Through painting, collage, and performance, I fuse sensuality with storytelling to unravel and reconstruct identity, tracing the volatile encounters between flesh, image, power, and gaze. Seductive yet defiant. Intimate yet untouchable. Unraveling, but in control.

My canvases give form to the abstract: colorful figures that translate personal experience into universal tension. Vivid color, intricate symbolism, and ethereal marks lure the viewer into precious questions — how we shape-shift to meet the world’s stare, where desire and performance collide, and how power is negotiated through artifice.

Pulling from the personal, fashion editorials, old master paintings, mythology, and disposable pop culture, I fracture faces and bodies until something raw and essential emerges: fluid, hybrid, constantly becoming. Extra limbs, auras, and impossible poses hold perfect stillness. These figures seduce and repel, dissolve and reassert. They live in the charged space between being seen and seizing the right to stare back.

I’m drawn to the erotic as a portal — a site of rage, resistance, sovereignty, and transformation. I explore femininity not as inevitability but as invention: performed, consumed, and contested. The work probes the blurred line between muse and author, where each battles for dominion.

My process is visceral and intuitive: a punk-rock dance of pouring, layering, stitching, scrubbing, and reclaiming — purposeful order found inside chaos. Scale is strategy: an overwhelming presence that demands space and insists on being witnessed.

At its core, my practice is portraiture as sovereignty — over the body, the image, and the narrative — a world where control and collapse can coexist, and power is not only held, but wielded with intent.

All of life is a creative act.
You birth your own story, inspire its veneration and make it so.

I am voracious for knowledge and experience,  actively using the everyday to transmute it’s wisdom through my work.

I will always make work with hopes to inspire others to live bold and true.

I <3 fantasy because it reminds me of the quiet vow I made to myself to never give up.

Welcome to my world.
